Our son "Mighty" Mason was diagnosed with Stage 4 embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (ERMS) in September 2018. In his nearly 2-year battle with cancer, Mason underwent a variety of treatments.
Upon diagnosis, he received the "standard treatment" consisting of 30 chemotherapy treatments and 43 radiation treatments over an 11-month period. Less than 6 weeks after receiving clean scans and being declared No Evidence of Disease (NED), Mason relapsed in October 2019. With this news, we were informed the survival rate was only 30% for children who relapse with ERMS and Mason immediately began another combination of chemotherapy.
When the salvage protocol didn't work, Mason participated in two unsuccessful clinical trials, one of which was in Seattle, WA for 6 weeks. Upon returning home, Mason was placed in hospice and bravely fought until June 25, 2020, when he gained his angel wings.
